A Rare, Cream-Splashed Heart Plant That Makes Love Last Longer
Hoya kerrii ‘Variegata’, commonly known as the Variegated Hoya Heart, is a rare and highly collectible twist on the classic Sweetheart Plant. Each thick, heart-shaped leaf is uniquely marbled with creamy white and soft green variegation, making every plant one of a kind.
Often sold as a single rooted leaf, this succulent beauty is slow-growing, durable, and deeply symbolic — a living heart that lasts far beyond traditional flowers. Its elegant variegation gives it a more refined, premium feel compared to the solid green variety.
Why the Variegated Version Stands Out
- Unique Variegation: Cream and green marbling on every leaf.
- Highly Giftable: A long-lasting symbol of love and friendship.
- Slow & Steady Growth: Minimal maintenance required.
- Collector Appeal: Rarer and more sought-after than the standard Hoya Heart.
Plant Profile
- Botanical Name: Hoya kerrii ‘Variegata’
- Common Names: Variegated Hoya Heart, Sweetheart Plant, Lucky Heart Plant
- Family: Apocynaceae
- Native Range: Southeast Asia
- Growth Habit: Slow-growing succulent vine (when mature)
Ed’s Care Guide
Care Level: Easy
Light: Thrives in bright direct to bright indirect light. Variegated varieties require strong light to maintain crisp coloration.
Water: Water every 2–3 weeks, allowing soil to fully dry between waterings. Leaves may wrinkle slightly when thirsty.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix such as succulent soil blended with orchid bark for aeration.
Humidity: Adapts well to average household humidity.
Temperature: 65–85°F. Avoid exposure below 55°F.
Feeding: Light monthly feeding during spring and summer can encourage growth.
Propagation: Stem cuttings with a node (single leaves without nodes will not vine).
Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets and humans.
Single Leaf vs. Vining Plant
Most Variegated Hoya Hearts are sold as single rooted leaves. These can live happily for years in this form. Only cuttings that include a stem node will eventually produce vines.
Mature plants can develop long climbing stems with multiple heart-shaped leaves and clusters of fragrant, waxy pink blooms.
A Rare Twist on a Classic
The variegated form grows more slowly than the solid green Hoya kerrii, making it slightly harder to produce and more desirable among collectors. Its creamy marbling adds dimension and brightness, elevating this simple heart into a botanical statement piece.
