The "Heirloom Organically Grown Indian Brinjal" is a rare and highly sought-after variety of eggplant that is native to India. Known for its deep purple color and rich, flavorful taste, this eggplant has been traditionally grown and consumed in India for centuries.

One of the key features of the Indian brinjal (Nati Vankaya / Nati Kattarikkai) is that it is grown using only natural and organic methods, which means that it is free from the use of synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This not only results in a healthier, more nutritious product but also helps to preserve the environment by avoiding the use of harmful chemicals.

Indian brinjal is a versatile vegetable, it can be cooked in many ways, it can be stuffed, grilled, fried, sautéed and roasted. It's a great ingredient for traditional Indian dishes such as baingan bharta, chutney, and it can also be used in curries.

Indian Brinjal is must sweeter than its relative, with few seeds and a medium-thick edible skin that does not require peeling before being cooked. The interior has a creamy texture.
While technically a fruit, Brinjal is prepared as a vegetable and found in Asian cuisines worldwide. One of the most versatile of ingredients, it can be baked whole or cut in half, steamed, grilled, sautéed or braised.

Growing

Eggplant – also known as Brinjal grows wild in its homeland of South Asia as a perennial plant, though these warm-season vegetables are treated by most gardeners as annuals. Given their tropical and subtropical heritage, eggplants do require relatively high temperatures, similar to tomatoes and peppers (Nightshade family). They grow fastest when temperatures are between 70 and 85°F and very slowly during cooler weather. Like tomatoes and peppers, eggplants develop and hang from the branches of a plant that grows several feet in height. Because they need warm soil, eggplants are usually started indoors about two months in advance to get a head start.

Planting

  • Start seeds indoors about 8–9 weeks prior to the last spring frost. Seeds germinate quickly at temperatures between 70 to 90°F.
  • Do not plant eggplant transplants into the garden until after the last threat of frost.
  • Choose a very sunny spot for the best results.
  • Eggplant grows best in a well-drained sandy loam or loam soil, fairly high in organic matter.
  • Use a covering of black plastic mulch to warm soils before setting out transplants.
  • Eggplant requires moderate amounts of fertilizer. Mix about 1” of well-rotted manure or a general fertilizer about a week before planting.
  • If growing in pots, use at least 5-gallon pot per plant. Place it outdoor in full sun so it can be pollinated. Use premium soil mix to avoid disease.
  • Stake the plants right away (just an inch or two from the plant) to provide support as they climb and to avoid disturbing the soil later.
  • After planting, water well. Add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Care

  • Eggplant will fall over once loaded with fruit! Be sure to stake tall plants or use a cage to keep the plants upright.
  • Pinch out the terminal growing points for a bushier plant. For bigger fruits, restrict to five or six per plant.
  • Water well to moisten the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches so the soil is moist but never soggy.
  • The critical period for moisture is during fruit set and fruit development. Mulching can help to provide uniform moisture & conserve water.
  • Apply a balanced fertilizer twice during the growing season. Side-dress when the first fruits are about the size of a quarter. Note:Too much nitrogen may cause excessive vegetative growth.

Pests / Diseases

  • Flea beetles are probably the most common pest, but a healthy eggplant should be able to withstand damage from their tiny holes. Damage is usually serious only on young seedlings. Grow plants under row covers until they are large enough to tolerate leaf damage.
  • Powdery Mildew can affect eggplant. This appears as white, powdery spots on the leaves which may turn yellow and die. The best method of control is prevention. Plant where it receives full sun, and provide good air circulation. Water at the soil level, not on the leaves.
  • Tomato Hornworms are sometimes an issue as are Colorado potato beetles, lace bugs, and mites.
  • If the flowers on eggplants form but then fall off, or if fruit does not develop, the most likely problem is that the temperature is too cold.
  • If the fruits are small and not growing, it’s also probably too cold. Eggplants like it hot! Daytime temperatures need to be 80° to 90° F and night time temperatures should not go below 60° to 65° F or their grow is very slow to stalled.

Great Product, Works as Advertised
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
This product works exactly as described. It makes BM's smoother and gentler. I personally use the unflavored, no sweeteners added version, and honestly, it does not taste very good, but I feel that the results are worth it, and I do not like adding extra sweeteners or flavorings to my diet. I have used this product for many years and have found that about 1 1/2 to 2 tbsps in 12 ounces of water works the best for me. You will need to experiment a bit to find the ratio that works best for you. I recommend that you start on the low side and gradually increase the amount of Metamucil as needed.

Healthy, Effective, and great when mixed with Splenda and Koolaid mix. The best of many options I've tried.
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
I've sampled a few different varieties of fiber supplements, including both Benefiber and off-brands, and I found that Metamucil provided the most fiber in the least offensive beverage. Compared to the other brands, this stuff is smoother textured, and goes down easier, as a sort of happy medium between the grittier supplements and the thicker ones. What about effectiveness? I have apocalyptic IBS, and since starting to take this stuff regularly (one giant glass every morning and evening), my BMs have been much more regular, and more manageable. Flare-ups happen less, and it even seems to do a decent job when taken with meals of cutting the hit to my stomach and gut. I tend to take more than the recommended amount, with an even larger serving of water, as I feel like it helps me stay hydrated and full throughout the day. I started taking the classic orange Metamucil, but although I really liked the superior flavor (rather like Orange Tang) it packed several times more sugar in each serving than fiber, so while it was great for digestive health, the overall health impact was too negative. I also sampled the sugar-free berry flavors, but found that, although it was ostensibly healthier, the flavor wasn't great, and in addition it suffered from the aspartame aftertaste and further effects (Aspartame gives me headaches). So this was a dilemma for me. What to do? I actually wrote to Metamucil about it, and they recommended this product. The downside is that it comes with absolutely no flavor, so you need to provide your own in order to mask the texture (I wouldn't dream of trying to mix this in plain water--yuck!) The upside is they pack 100+ servings into a container, and you really are free to blend it into whatever suits your fancy. Obviously if you mix it with something like orange juice, then you're already negating the benefits of this stuff over the sugary orange flavor, but I've personally found a much better way. I like to mix this stuff with Kool-aid mix and Splenda (Sucralose) sweetener. I buy a ton of Splenda and kool-aid as it mixes up tasting sweet, like sugar, but without the calories or aftertaste. You can dump a spoonful of this stuff into a glass of splenda-koolaid, or just dump 8 servings worth of this stuff in with a packet of koolaid powder and a cup of splenda, and then just mix it up and spoon it into water as needed. Better tasting, sugar-free and packed with good useful fiber. EDIT: I wish I could subscribe to this stuff. Price of splenda has gone up, but I've figured out thatyou can just dump 7 packets of koolaid mix and 7 dashes of sucralose into a container of this and shake it up.

#1 for #2's
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
I like the lack of sweeteners and flavor. I just want the stuff that helps me poop. There is some citric acid in it (no idea why) which gives it a mildly acidic taste. Other than that, it does the trick.

Good Stuff
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 1.46 Pound (Pack of 1)
If you need more fiber in your diet, you need this. The price is right, it works very well and keeps me regular. I use this instead of the gummies or capsules. That's because you MUST put in in fluid, and hydration is SO important when using a psyllium product as it causes water to be absorbed very quickly once it is ingested, and you don't want to dehydrate! Mixes very well in water and has little to no taste whatsoever. Stay regular, stay hydrated and stay well.
