Anubias barteri nana bonsai
Anubias barteri nana bonsai is a uniquely sculpted cultivar that has been selectively grown to produce a miniaturized, tree-like growth form reminiscent of a bonsai tree. The compact, structured appearance — with a visible trunk-like rhizome and a canopy of small, thick green leaves — makes it one of the most distinctive and conversation-worthy plants in the aquarium hobby.
Planting tip: Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias barteri nana bonsai should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.
Despite its unusual form, Anubias barteri nana bonsai is no more demanding than standard Anubias nana. It tolerates low lighting without CO₂ supplementation and prefers temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. The compact nana size makes it ideal for nano tanks and low-tech setups. The slow growth rate of this cultivar is actually an advantage, as it preserves the compact, sculptural form over time without requiring frequent pruning.
Anubias barteri nana bonsai is typically presented already attached to a small piece of driftwood or stone, mirroring the bonsai aesthetic. If planting bare-root, attach it to hardscape ensuring the rhizome remains visible and never buried in substrate.
In the aquascape, Anubias barteri nana bonsai functions as a true specimen plant. Its tree-like silhouette creates a sense of scale and perspective, particularly in small tanks where it can represent a full-sized tree in miniature. Pairing it with mosses like Java Moss or Weeping Moss draped over the rhizome or driftwood base enhances the bonsai illusion beautifully. A plant that sparks conversation and admiration in any aquarium.
