- Adaptable to various light conditions
Wallisia cyanea, formerly known as Tillandsia cyanea, is a true stunner in the bromeliad world. This airplant forms a elegant rosette of thin, recurved green leaves that create a fountain-like effect. Its true glory, however, lies in its breathtaking inflorescence - a large, pink, paddle-shaped spike adorned with striking violet flowers that emerge sequentially over several weeks. This floral display creates a mesmerizing contrast against the plant's verdant foliage.
| Size | Inches |
| Potted | 4" |
| Wood Hanging | 13-16" |
Collector's Note: Recently reclassified from Tillandsia to Wallisia based on DNA analysis, this species offers both beauty and botanical intrigue. Its specific epithet cyanea, meaning "blue," refers to the intense purple-blue hue of its flowers.
Care Tips: Grow in a fast-draining potting mix or mount with sphagnum moss. Provide bright, indirect light, although it tolerates lower light levels better than many airplants. Water regularly, allowing the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings.
Ideal for:
- Collectors seeking dramatic flowering bromeliads
- Indoor gardeners with bright spaces
- Those looking for low-maintenance, long-blooming plants
- Beginners to the world of airplants
Display Recommendation: Showcase in a hanging basket or mount on bark to highlight its cascading form and allow the inflorescence to shine.
Bring the vibrant beauty of the Ecuadorian rainforest into your home with this award-winning tropical gem.
