• Growing hibiscus is an easy way to add a tropical flair to your garden. When you know how to care for hibiscus plants, you will be rewarded with many years of lovely flowers. Let’s look at some tips on how to care for hibiscus.
• Nick the Seed Coat
• Nick the hard seed coat at the wider, rounded end of the seed with a clean craft knife.
• Soak the Seeds.
• Soak the seeds in a small bowl of hot water for up to 24 hours. Begin the sowing process 12 weeks before your last expected spring frost.
• Prep the Planting Tray.
• Fill a planting tray with moist seed-starting mix, usually a soil-less product that combines perlite, vermiculite and peat moss.
• Sow the Seeds.
• Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep, firming the moist seed-starting mix over the seed. Place one seed per plug if your seed tray has inserts that hold the mix in separate 1- to 2-inch compartments. Otherwise sow seeds a few inches apart so seedlings will be easy to remove later.
• Keep Them Warm.
• Set the tray on a waterproof greenhouse heat mat set to 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit or in a room with the same temperature range
• Conserve Moisture.
• Cover the tray with its included clear plastic dome or with plastic wrap to keep moisture in.
• Check the Seed Tray.
• Check the seed tray regularly over the one to three weeks it takes the seeds to germinate. Ensure the soil is moist but not soggy. Too-wet soil can cause the seeds to rot before they germinate.
• Remove the Plastic.
• Remove the plastic when plants emerge and move the tray to a site where it receives bright, indirect sunlight.
• Apply Fertilizer.
• Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer mixed to half its recommended strength with every other watering after the seedlings produce their first true leaves – the first pair of leaves after the initial seed leaves that emerge at germination. Water enough to keep the potting soil evenly moist, never letting it dry out or become waterlogged.
• Transplant the Seedlings.
• Transplant the seedlings to separate 1-gallon containers filled with standard potting soil when they have at least three sets of leaves. Allow them to grow in a sheltered area for several weeks before transitioning them to their permanent outdoor location when all danger of frost has passed.

Best book for beginners to learn safe practices in single pitch climbing
Format: Paperback
Great book for beginner climbers, especially those who want to set up top ropes. Goes over anchor setup, knots, gear placement, belaying, rappelling, etc. Lots of good photos. Very easy to read, don’t be put off by the description as a “manual”, and worth reading to learn how to do things safely. It’s definitely not just for those who want to guide or take AMGA courses. If you are debating getting this book or “Top roping” by the same author, get this one, as it contains 100% of the content in the other book (much of the exact same text and photos) and more, and is just as easy to read. In fact, this has a ton of overlap (and many of the same photos) with “Climbing Anchors” which the author co-authored, but is more accessible and spans a wider range of content. If you are the “leader” of your beginner climbing friends or even if you have some experience but want to take a beginner climbing outside, this is a must read.

Perfect reference guide
Format: Paperback
I bought this book to supplement my lessons with an AMGA guide to learn how to set up toprope climbs. I used it many times to practice and reinforce everything I learned. It is really well written and my favorite book in terms of the knowledge contained within. As common sense would dictate this is not a book to teach your how to toprope...it is a reference to what you have learned?

Essential To Read Before the Class
Format: Paperback
This book provides a good overview of what you'll need to know for your AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) course and assessment. If you plan to take that course this book is a no-brainer. You just have to buy it and read it. There are a few shortcomings: * The photos of how to tie the knots skip a lot and it is impossible to learn the knots from the book. * The photos of what not to do should be clearly labeled with a red cross bar or WRONG overlay on the photo. If you flip causally through the book and look at the photos some very wrong stuff is there and you have to read the text to know that it is not recommended. * The religious debate on anchor systems rages on. Should you set up a Joshua Tree System with Tether or a Backside System? I realize the AMGA doesn't want to pick sides and will say either is acceptable, but the book doesn't even try to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various anchor systems.
