Description
Hoya Kerrii Heart is famous for its thick, heart-shaped leaves that symbolize love and affection. It is often sold as a single-leaf cutting rooted in soil. While these single-leaf plants can survive for years, they typically won’t develop into full vines unless propagated with a stem node.
When grown as a vine, it produces long, trailing stems with multiple heart-shaped leaves. Mature plants may also bloom clusters of small, star-shaped, fragrant flowers.
Popular Hoya Varieties
- Hoya Krimson Queen – Variegated leaves with creamy-white edges.
- Hoya Macrophylla – Large, textured leaves with distinct veining.
- Hoya Compacta 'Hindu Rope' – Twisted, curly leaves ideal for cascading displays.
- Hoya Carnosa Krimson Princess – Vibrant variegated foliage with pink highlights.
Care Guide
Light Requirements
Hoya Kerrii Heart thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light levels, brighter light encourages faster growth and flowering.
Watering Needs
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, as this plant is highly drought-tolerant and prefers a dry environment over soggy soil.
Humidity
Hoya Kerrii prefers moderate humidity levels (40–60%), but it adapts well to average indoor conditions. Mist the leaves occasionally in dry environments.
Fertilization
Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing, as Hoyas do not require heavy feeding.
Common Pests
Mealybugs: Remove with rubbing alcohol or treat with insecticidal soap if infestations occur.
Spider Mites: Increase humidity and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap to manage infestations.
Scale Insects: Use horticultural oil or manually remove scale insects with a soft cloth.
FAQs
Can Hoya Kerrii grow from a single leaf cutting?
While single-leaf cuttings are popular, they typically will not grow into a vine unless they include a stem node. They can, however, survive as decorative plants for many years.
How often should I water Hoya Kerrii?
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can cause root rot, so err on the side of underwatering.
Is Hoya Kerrii Heart pet-friendly?
Hoya plants are generally non-toxic to pets, but ingestion may cause mild digestive upset. Keep out of reach as a precaution.
Does it need high humidity?
Moderate humidity is sufficient, but it adapts well to average indoor humidity levels.
Is it an air-purifying plant?
Yes, Hoya Kerrii helps purify indoor air. Explore more air-purifying plants.
