🌿 The Rose of Jericho: A Plant That Comes Back to Life
The Rose of Jericho is one of the desert's great wonders. Left dry, it sits as a tight, curled ball that looks like a knot of dead twigs. Set it in water and within hours the stems begin to relax, and over the next few days it unfurls into a soft, living green rosette. Botanically it is Selaginella lepidophylla (also listed under the older name Lycopodium lepidophyllum), an ancient spikemoss whose lineage reaches back hundreds of millions of years. It carries many names across cultures: Jericho Flower, Resurrection Flower, Resurrection Moss, Dinosaur Plant, and Stone Flower.
This revival is not a trick. It is desiccation tolerance, a survival strategy this spikemoss evolved in the arid Chihuahuan Desert of the United States and Mexico. When water is scarce it curls inward to shield its tissues, then rehydrates and resumes photosynthesis the moment moisture returns. Ours is sustainably wild-harvested from that native desert range, the exact conditions the plant evolved in, and every order is backed by our 100% money-back guarantee.
Most people keep it as a living curiosity on a dish of pebbles, a hands-on classroom demonstration, or a meaningful gift, and it has long been honored as a symbol of resilience and renewal in many folk traditions. It opens and closes through many wet-and-dry cycles, so a single plant can put on its show again and again. For step-by-step instructions, see our complete Resurrection Plant care guide, and explore more living botanicals in our Sacred Live Plants collection. If you are after the herbal form to use rather than display, our resurrection plant tincture guide is a great next stop.
Timelapse: a Rose of Jericho unfurls from a dry ball into a green rosette in water.
🌱 From the Sacred Plant Co Farm. Sacred Plant Co is a soil-first farm. Our own farm in Colorado earned a groundbreaking Haney Soil Health Score of 25.4, a number that surpasses the soil biology measured in pristine forest land. That score is the heart of who we are. We believe healthier soil grows more complex, more potent plants, and that philosophy is the reason we hold every herb we carry to the same biological and per-lot testing standards.
🌵 Ways People Enjoy It
Set it on pebbles, add water, and watch it open. A calm, interactive accent for a windowsill or desk.
Long honored across folk traditions as an emblem of resilience, rebirth, and fresh starts.
Opens and closes through many wet-and-dry cycles, so the show repeats again and again.
A hands-on classroom demo and a thoughtful, low-maintenance present that sparks wonder.

Good to Know
This Rose of Jericho is offered as a living ornamental and ceremonial plant for display, not as a food or supplement. Keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
For the healthiest plant, use room-temperature water, soak it only a few days at a time, and let it dry out fully between soaks. Allowing it to dry between waterings keeps it vibrant and prevents mold.
Our policy is simple: if you aren't happy, send it back and receive a full refund. Anytime, for any reason.
🌿 Frequently Asked Questions
How do I bring my Rose of Jericho back to life?
It is wonderfully simple. We set the dry, curled plant in a shallow dish over a layer of pebbles, then add room-temperature water until it just reaches the base. Within a few hours the stems begin to relax, and over the next one to four days it greens and opens into a flat rosette. After four to seven days we pour off the water and let it dry out completely before the next soak. Our full Resurrection Plant care guide walks you through every step.
Is the resurrection plant really alive, and will it keep coming back?
Yes. It is a true desiccation-tolerant spikemoss, a survivor by nature. In the desert it can rest dormant through long dry spells and revive when the rains return, and on your windowsill it does the same on a smaller scale. A single plant opens and closes through many wet-and-dry cycles, so you can enjoy the transformation again and again. The key is to let it dry out fully between soaks, which keeps it healthy for the long run.
Can I make tea from this Rose of Jericho?
We offer this Rose of Jericho as a living ornamental and ceremonial plant, prized for its revival display rather than the cup. If you are looking for the herbal form to actually use, our resurrection plant tincture guide is the perfect next stop and points you to the products made for that purpose.
Where does your Rose of Jericho come from?
The Rose of Jericho is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of the United States and Mexico, and that is exactly where ours is sustainably wild-harvested, right in the conditions it evolved to thrive in. Every plant we ship carries the same 100% money-back guarantee as everything we carry, so you can welcome it home with complete confidence.
